Anxiety and depression are serious matters that too many people silently suffer from. But as someone who has been there and who has overcome (and continues to overcome), I’m here to tell you that you aren’t alone and it’s far from the end. Fortunately, modern technology and progress have paved the way for countless resources to improve mental health. But there was one unpresrcibed and underestimated “tool” that changed everything for me: fashion. I know you’re probably thinking, “that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.” And while it might sound ridiculous, it’s absolutely true. In fact, numerous studies have actually shown how fashion affects mental health in a positive way. So why not try it?
ANXIETY & DEPRESSION SUFFERERS: YOU’RE NOT ALONE
When it comes to feelings of depression and anxiety, many of mine were birthed as a result of a four-year health battle. A journey that left me self-conscious, humiliated, and depleted of confidence. My appearance had drastically changed and my cognitive skills suffered immensely–a natural consequence of four years of sleep deprivation and the extreme physical, emotional, and mental stress my body endured.
I couldn’t help but feel ashamed of the unrecognizable person I had become. In my eyes, frankly, I had become ugly and incompetent. And I was so afraid that others could see it too. I didn’t want to see anyone, and I didn’t want anyone to see me. So naturally, anxiety and depression became my closest companions for those four long years.
For me, fashion was a feasible approach that I had 100% control over. It was something I enjoyed that immediately helped me start conquering crippling anxiety and depression. Through the lens of style, I found a unique path towards self-expression, empowerment, and ultimately, liberation.
RETAIL THERAPY HAS SUDDENLY TAKEN ON A WHOLE NEW MEANING
Now I understand you might be thinking, “fashion!? That’s not a real treatment for anxiety or depression.” And you may be right. But did you know that the way we dress has a direct effect on our mental and emotional state? From colors to fabrics, prints to fit—clothing has a remarkable power to shape our mood, confidence, and overall well-being. Numerous studies have explored the psychological impact of clothing choices, revealing the incredible connection between our attire and our internal state.
Throughout my personal health journey, when my confidence was at an all time low, engaging in conversation with strangers, or even friends and family could be a paralyzing thought. But I noticed that every time I dressed up and felt good about what I was wearing, my anxiety seemed to significantly decrease. It was manageable. It no longer controlled me. I’d go out of my way to talk to others, I’d say yes to invitations. I was bold, I was outspoken, and I was confident!
I learned that this truly wasn’t the end for me. And I found that experiencing the joy of life again was possible. Anxiety and depression didn’t have to dictate my life. Freedom from their prison was possible. And it’s possible for you too. So let’s talk about how fashion affects your mental health and a few ways you can use it to your advantage.
1. make an effort/dress with intention
Depression can be a paralyzing thing. I remember for me, most days I didn’t even move from my bed. There were quite a few days that I didn’t even make it to the bathroom to brush my teeth. So getting dressed? Nope. Out of the question. So I understand how mountainous of a task it can be. But I actually found that when I could pull myself up and get dressed in the morning, I felt a lot better.
Research has shown that the act of choosing outfits and dressing with intention can provide a sense of purpose and structure in daily life. Especially for those who work from home (me!)! Additionally, making conscious fashion choices can help when struggling with depression by providing a sense of control and self-expression. Selecting clothing that reflects your personal style and make you feel comfortable and confident can contribute to a boost in mood and self-esteem!
Similarly, fashion can play a role in alleviating anxiety. The process of dressing can become a ritualized practice that offers a sense of routine and stability. This can be particularly helpful for individuals experiencing high levels of anxiety, like I was. By focusing on selecting clothes that make you feel good, you can redirect your attention away from thoughts that fuel your anxiety.
Furthermore, when we feel comfortable and good in what we are wearing, we naturally feel more confident. Ever heard the quote “dress for success”? When we dress with intention and purpose, it causes a mental shift in our mind, empowering us and allowing us to feel more secure and safe in our own skin.
2. CHOOSE THE APPROPRIATE COLORS
When it comes to how fashion affects mental health, one important aspect to not overlook is color. In the same way that your favorite colors evoke a certain feeling from you, many colors have the power to influence your emotions and mood. Color psychology is a fascinating field that explores how different colors can impact our mental and emotional well-being.
TO BOOST SEROTONIN–AKA YOUR “HAPPY” HORMONE
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that impacts every part of you, from your emotions to your body and motor skills. It plays many important roles including helping you regulate anxiety, experience happiness, and sleep. Thus, if your body is struggling with these things, anxiety and feelings of depression can be natural results.
To boost serotonin, opt for oranges, yellows, and pinks. These colors can positively impact your mental state, making you feel happier, more content, optimistic, and less anxious.
TO EASE ANXIETY
Anxiety can be debilitating, but certain colors can help calm your mind and boost your confidence. Soft and cool tones such as blues and greens can create a serene atmosphere and help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. If you’re struggling with anxiety, try incorporating these colors into your wardrobe to help put your mind at ease.
FOR A CONFIDENCE BOOST
The right color choice can have a profound impact on your confidence and self-image. Colors like red and black are known for their bold and powerful awe-factor. Red is often associated with passion, beauty, and power. Black, also associated with power, represents importance, edge, and sophistication.
Discovering which colors complement your specific skin tone can also greatly enhance your confidence and image. Our unique undertones mean that what looks great on one person, may make another appear sickly or washed out. Wearing skin-tone-flattering colors can make your features pop and give your complexion a radiant glow—a simple, instant confidence booster.
By wearing powerful colors like red and black, or hues that harmonize with your complexion, you not only enhance your appearance but you can influence your mental state. When we feel good about the way we look, or empowered by what we wear, we naturally feel more confident. One of my favorite quotes: “Image inspires confidence; confidence breeds success.”
When we feel confident, we take more risks, try new things, and are more likely to succeed. This only increases our self-assuredness, confidence, and reminds us of the value our life carries!
To Reignite your Creative Spark
Creativity plays a significant role in our mental and emotional health. To nurture and ignite your creative spirit, consider opting for the color purple. This charming color not only sparks imagination but dark purples are also associated with luxury, so if you want to feel like a million bucks, consider adding it to your wardrobe. 😉
But of Course: Stay True to Yourself
It’s important to note that color preferences and their effects can vary from person to person. What matters most is how a particular color makes you feel personally! When it comes to how fashion affects mental health, self-expression is the pillar. You’ll always feel your best when you stay true to yourself!
3. Switch up the Fit of Your Clothes
When we feel sad or anxious, it’s natural to reach for our lounge clothes or pieces that are more casual and comfortable. This was so true for me! But tying in to Number #1 and #2, when we dress with intention, we can instantly redirect our mental focus and state.
On many days, my “comfy clothes” did more damage than good. They made me feel even more purposeless, lazy, and sad. On many of those days, I’d instead choose to dress up. I’d wear something that flattered my unique body shape and opt for a color that gave me the feeling I needed that day–be it confidence, peace, or joy.
The fit of our clothing can influence our self-perception and body image, thereby affecting our emotional well-being. Wearing clothes that fit well and flatter our body shape can enhance our confidence and self-esteem, making us feel more positive and comfortable in our own skin! If you’re interested in learning how to dress for your unique shape in a way that empowers you and boosts your confidence, see if these tips help! If you’re struggling, try exchanging your comfy clothes with some well fitting pieces and see if it helps! I know it helped me!
Reclaim Your Confidence & Take Your Life Back
The journey through anxiety and depression can be a challenging one. Trust me, I’ve been there. That’s one of the reasons I started this blog–to reach others who might be struggling as well and give them hope. You are not alone. And this is NOT the end.
And, obviously, I know that fashion alone is not a treatment for anxiety or depression. I’m definitely not condoning substituting professional help with shopping. An outfit-change will simply not cure a serious problem. If you’re struggling, make sure to reach out to a professional who can help you overcome your struggles. Now, I’m also not condoning breaking the budget or racking up credit card bills in the name of “therapy.” I’m simply sharing my story and my experience with how fashion affects mental health. For me, fashion was a powerful aid when it came to reclaiming my confidence and overcoming anxiety and depression. I know that we are all different. But if I find something that works for me, I will always share it in hopes that it might help you too.
Fashion offers us a tangible way to take control when everything else feels out of our hands. It provides an outlet for creativity and self-expression. It creates structure and routine, empowers us, and boosts our confidence when it’s running low. And though all the tips I’ve shared so far were helpful for me, at the end of the day, the best thing you can do for you, is remain true to who you are. Choose the clothes that make you feel best. Do what you need to do. And if you’re struggling, don’t wait to ask for help. There are so many invaluable resources to help you through this journey. You aren’t alone and you don’t have to fight this fight by yourself. Better days are on their way, friend. Never give up.
